Longevity
Longevity is a subject that every client should be aware of. A lot of tattoos look beautiful on Instagram today, however we do not know for sure, what the tattoo will really look like in years to come.
I have been tattooing for 15 years, and seeing my tattoos healed after 5,10,15 years I noticed something that younger tattoo artists will not be able to see, as they only have been tattooing for 5 years or less.
The biggest part of longevity is of coarse contrast, and a clear tattoo. Usually clients want a really small and cute tattoo, however, really small and cute usually doesn’t work for longevity purposes. There’s a new style called micro realism, and honestly, it looks really cool now, however when it ages, it will not be as clear as it’s when first done. Not everything that glitter is gold. Nowadays if a tattoo looks good online, that’s all matters, even knowing the tattoo will not be there in 10 years, all it matters is how many likes you get when the tattoo is posted.
What plays a big part in longevity in a tattoo is how healthy the client is and their life style. Life Style has a big part in how the tattoo will look in years to come.
A tattoo collector, who’s really in to sun bathing will not have a well aged tattoo on their skin. Even if you go away on holiday once or twice, and not apply sunblock in your skin, your tattoo will fade. Sun block is a must when you are exposing your tattoo to the sun, as the sun will ruin your tattoo.
Drinking good water will be a great contributor on how well your tattoo will age. Eating well, healthy fresh food, will be a great contributor on how your tattoo will age.
If you have a pretty bad health and eat fast food all the time, your tattoo will not age well.
Basically the healthier the customer is, the better the tattoo will age. So it’s not only up to the tattoo artist how the tattoo will age.
A tattoo Artist can contribute to the tattoo aging well, by contrasting the tattoo as much as possible, making a solid tattoo. However, once the tattoo is out of the door, you don’t know how the client is going to treat his own body, or which kind of environment the client will be in or expose the tattoo too.
I had a surreal experience, where a client got back to me after 15 years. I don’t know what the client had been up to in 15 years. And If he was nice to me about it, I would even touched the tattoo up for free. However because he wasn’t nice about it, I just didn’t reply to him. If you are gonna get in touch with your tattoo artist after 15 years, you gotta make sure you speak to them like a human. He said he didn’t have the courage to speak to me about it, if someone doesn’t speak to me about something, how can I help them? How can I make things better if I’m unaware of it? I’m here to help anyone who allows me to help them. That’s why when I draw it comes out perfect, because I’m on control of it, I can go back to it as many times as I can.
That’s why, I put on my Instagram, anyone who’s been tattooed by me over the years, if your tattoo needs touching up, I will touch it up for you, free of charge.
If that client who messaged me after 15 years had thought like that, he would got a free touch up on his tattoo. However, because he chose to speak to me inappropriately, he’s gonna have to pay for his touch up by someone else. So lack of communication is a contributor to a lot of tattoo issues. Stick with your artist and have faith in your artists. We are busy artists so we are not going to remember most tattoos after 15 years.
However if you communicate with me not matter how long after the tattoo was done, I will do anything under my capabilities to touch the tattoo up. And me and the client can both be happy.
So be healthy and your tattoo will last
